Recently one of my least favorite days of the year, Bike to Work Day. Which is preceded by Bike to Work Month and Bike to Work Week. This is the one day out of the year where politicians and executives ride a bike to work, usually a bike on loan or a bike share bike. For a mile or two at the most, complete with a police escort and bottled water. There may even be a pitstop at the end where you will be feted with snacks, raffle prizes, awards, and tchotchkes. The people who do this once a year will pat themselves on the back for saving the environment.
The rest of the year, especially if you work in a corporate setting, bike commuters are viewed as a bunch of weirdos who ride in all kinds of weather and are smelly. Even though you take a shower or a sink bath. To say nothing of peoples views on cyclist wearing Lycra if they are nota competitive cyclist.
Just one I would like to see corporations whose employees have
easy access to bike
trails start a weekly or bi monthly bike train to truly
encourage employees to ride
bikes to work. Many companies have people who
coordinate car pools, van pools,
and shuttle buses that make pick ups at SEPTA light rail stations.
How hard would it
be to find some active bike commuters who would lead a bike train?
